Trentalange-Kelley Motorcycle Accidents

It’s finally here…summer! Beautiful weather, family fun, and outdoor activities are endless for the next 92 days. Unfortunately, so are the dangers of heat stroke, drowning, accidents, and other summer activity hazards. Below are some important safety tips to keep your summer emergency free.

Safety Tips for Drivers and Motorcyclists
The summer months bring an influx of drivers on the road – and with them an increase in the number of fatal vehicle crashes. AAA reports that the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the deadliest time of year for teen drivers, with fatalities 15% higher than the rest of the year.

Some important things to keep in mind while on the road this summer:
Ensure that your vehicle is up-to-date on its safety checks and features. This includes lights, breaks, safety sensors, and windshield wipers.
Motorcyclists: wear a helmet. Drivers: buckle your seatbelt.
Always signal before changing lanes or turning.
Double-check your rearview mirrors and back-up cameras before reversing.
Maintain the speed limit and keep a safe distance between you and other cars.
Follow the rules of the road.
Avoid distractions while driving, including talking on the phone, texting, playing with the radio, eating, drinking, or other passengers.
Look out for pedestrians and bicyclists – especially at intersections or near parks/playgrounds. Keep your attention 15 seconds ahead of you scanning sidewalks and intersections for any potential dangers
Never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Safety Tips for Pedestrians and Bicyclists
The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration estimates that 4,600 pedestrians are killed and more than 70,000 are injured in traffic-related incidents every year. The Governors Highway Safety Administration indicates a 10% increase in pedestrian fatalities in the summer months, with a pedestrian killed every 10 minutes.

Pedestrian accidents and deaths can be avoided by remembering to:
Be alert. Minimize distractions such as headphones and cell phones.
Look both ways before crossing the street.
Hold children’s hands when crossing the street.
Only cross the street at designated intersections and when you have the right of way.
Be visible. Do not assume that motorists can see you.
If you are out at night or during low-visibility weather, wear reflective clothing.
Always wear a well-fitting helmet and ensure that your bicycle is in a safe condition to ride.
Ride your bicycle with the flow of traffic in a designated bike lane, or within a safe distance of moving cars and parked cars.
Signal before turning.

While summertime is exciting, safety should be everyone’s priority. When preparing for your favorite summer activity, please following these safety tips first to avoid having to call 9-1-1 later.

Wishing you safe fun in the sun this summer season.
